The main purpose of the monograph was to present the first six studies in a ganzfeld research program conducted at Cambridge University in the 1970s. Ganzfeld is a form of free-response experimental methodology which combined a method to increase attention to internally-generated imagery and target material which could be described in a free-form way. Not only was it hoped that the methodology would allow individuals freer access to psi-generated imagery but that the experiment itself would be more analogous to spontaneous psi experiences than card-guessing and other forced choiced methodologies are.

The author discusses the genesis of his interest in the ganzfeld, and the development of the methodology used at Cambridge in his series of studies. He also made suggestions for the improvement of the methodology as a means to obtain results indicative of the operation of ESP, but also as a means to test process-oriented questions about the generation of “hitting” and “missing” imagery, and other questions of importance to free-response reseachers.
